Ride High Publishes 2024 Impact Report, Highlighting Vital Support for Vulnerable Children in Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes children’s charity Ride High has published its 2024 Impact Report, revealing the significant and growing role the organisation plays in transforming the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children across Milton Keynes at the surrounding areas.

An increasing number of young people are struggling with factors such as poverty, trauma, abuse, and neglect. In a year marked by rising demand and increasing pressures on children’s services, Ride High supported a record 379 children—its highest annual figure to date. The charity offers a unique programme combining horses, equine-based activities and one-to-one support to help children build confidence, improve their mental wellbeing and develop critical life skills.

“Every statistic represents a child whose life has changed,” said Olivia Sugdon, CEO of Ride High. “We are proud of what we’ve achieved this year, but we are also committed to constantly improving how we measure, deliver and grow our impact—so we can reach even more children who need us.”

The Impact Report shows that:

  • 65% of children on the programme were experiencing mental health difficulties
  • 11% lived in the UK’s top 10% most deprived areas
  • 76% of members improved their communication skills
  • 74% reported improved self-esteem
  • 91% made new friendships—an important step in overcoming the isolation many children face
  • 74% attained a positive destination on leaving Ride High.

Ride High currently receives referrals from over 40 local organisations, including CAMHS, GPs, schools, refugee groups and social services, enabling it to reach children at a critical stage—often when they are at risk of falling through the cracks of overstretched services.

The MK Community Foundation’s Vital Signs Reports (2024–25) highlighted, 32% of children in Milton Keynes as living in poverty, and 1 in 4 pupils aged 11 to 16 struggling with mental health issues. In this challenging landscape, Ride High continues to provide a safe, consistent sanctuary for children facing trauma, neglect, or emotional distress.

The charity’s continued growth is driven by a strong commitment to value and transparency—81p in every £1 raised goes directly to charitable activity.

Looking ahead, Ride High is looking to open new sites, the first of two planned expansions over the next three years. This development will extend the charity’s reach and bring the life-changing Ride High programme to even more children across the UK.

“Our ability to deliver and grow this vital work is only possible thanks to the support of our local community,” said Sugdon. “We are deeply grateful to the businesses, partners and individuals who believe in our mission. Together, we can continue to change lives.”
